Training and what is involved

As soon as possible after joining the group, you will be allocated your own Observer and he or she will serve as your mentor until such time as you have passed your test.

The amount and type of training required will be tailored to you as an individual; there are no prescribed course lengths at present. Experience shows that the average rider attains an Advanced Level of riding after about 6 sessions.

Please appreciate that Observers are volunteers and receive no reimbursement of costs from the group, so you will be required to make a contribution to the Observers' fuel costs for each run. Observers have to attain a very high standard of riding and pass an Observer Qualification before they are authorised to Observe.

Your Motorcycle

When you arrive for any activity within the group, whether it is a ride out with your Observer or an organised run, please make sure that your motorcycle is maintained in good order and road legal.

If for any reason it is found that this is not the case, you will be asked not to take part, and to remedy the situation before attending again. This is not a case of the group "making silly rules". The fact is that if the worst happens and you are stopped, the association is made with the group as a whole, RoSPA as an organisation, and will reflect badly on us and undermine the standing of the Motorcycle section.

The Test itself

The RoSPA Advanced Riders Test costs £54 for those over the age of 26 and £47 for those under 26 years of age.

The test is administered by RoSPA Headquarters and exacting standards are expected. In short you will be expected to be SAFE, SMOOTH, SYSTEMATIC and PROGRESSIVE showing that you have a good understanding of Motorcycle Roadcraft and the Highway Code. The test will be conducted with an examiner following you on another motorcycle. Radios are not normally used and directions are given by signal.

For more information about the test, visit the RoADA Web Site.

The Grading System

RoADA operate a grading system when carrying out tests. On completion of your test you will be awarded either a Gold, Silver or Bronze pass, dependent on the examiner's view of how well you have ridden. A Gold pass is the highest civilian motorcycle qualification available and an extremely high standard is required to achieve this.
